THE ADOPTION PROCESS
This page is designed to give you a breakdown of the adoption process.  If you have never adopted a family member through a rescue organization before, here are the answers to some questions that you may have:
Adoption...Step-by-Step

* Neighbor island families may apply, but please know it is a more costly and
time consuming process.  If you would like to know more, please contact us.

  • Do your research first to determine if an IG is the right breed for you and your family:  ABOUT IGs
  • Fill out an Adoption Application (.pdf file) and return the completed application to Lori Brown via email : lori@shakadoghawaii.com
  • Your application will be reviewed, we will check references and contact you within 10-14 days if we are going to continue on with a home visit.  We require all families to be present for the home visit and want to ensure the environment is safe for one of our IG's.
  • If your family has been approved for adoption - after reference checking and a home visit - we talk about which foster dogs might be a good fit, and at that time, introduce you to dogs in foster care.
  • Upon the finalization of the adoption process, you will be required to fill out an Adoption Agreement and required to donate an adoption fee to IGRF (Italian Greyhound Rescue Fund).  Your donation will be returned to IGRF to provide medical care to future rescued Italian Greyhounds.
  • PRICING GUIDELINES ARE AS FOLLOWS FOR ADOPTIONS EFFECTIVE 7/1/10
      PUPPIES - 6 MONTHS-$350
      7 MONTHS - 2 YRS-$325
      3 YRS - 8 YRS-$300
      OVER 8 YRS-$275
  • Finally, you and your new family member will be united!  Congratulations!  You've adopted an Italian Greyhound!  We encourage you to contact us at any time with questions, concerns and for advice.
When an IG comes into rescue, whether the dog is an owner turn-in or has been sprung from a shelter, their needs must be assessed.

We take each IG to the vet for their health to be evaluated; and, if necessary, an update of vaccinations, a dental, and, to be spayed or neutered.

While the dogs are being fostered in our care, we will evaluate their temperament and training.  Because of the diversity of our foster homes, we will be able to determine if the IGs in our care are suitable for homes with other dogs, large and small, and with cats.
We know that the adoption process can sometimes be nerve-wracking for you, the adopter.  Please be patient and know that everything that we do is in the absolute best interests of the dog.  We are volunteers with IGCA Rescue because we adore this wonderful breed, and we take their care and re-homing very seriously.  Your patience will pay off in the end and you will have gained the
reward of a new best friend!
